A Guide to Healing Through Quranic Recitation

Ruqya, a form of spiritual healing in Islam, involves reciting specific verses from the Quran to seek protection and cure from various ailments, both physical and spiritual. This practice is deeply rooted in Islamic tradition and has been used for centuries to provide relief and comfort to those in need. In this blog, we will explore the significance of Ruqya, provide translations of the recitations

What is Ruqya?

Ruqya refers to the practice of reciting Quranic verses and supplications to invoke Allah’s protection and healing. It is performed to ward off evil, cure diseases, and relieve distress caused by spiritual afflictions such as the evil eye, black magic, and jinn possession. The basis for Ruqya can be found in various hadiths and the Quran itself, where the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) emphasized the importance of seeking Allah’s help through these recitations.

The Process of Ruqya at IQS

    • After the recitation, the Hafiz or Qari will blow lightly over water or oil, which can then be used for drinking or anointing the body. They may also blow and wipe their hands over the affected area, following the Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).
  5. Supplications and Dua:
    • Specific supplications (Dua) are made, asking Allah for protection and healing. These supplications are derived from authentic Hadiths and are intended to invoke Allah’s mercy and help.

Translation: Allah! There is no deity except Him, the Ever-Living, the Sustainer of [all] existence. Neither drowsiness overtakes Him nor sleep. To Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth. Who is it that can intercede with Him except by His permission? Transliteration: Aamanar-Rasoolu bimaa unzila ilayhi mir-Rabbihee walmu’minoon; kullun aamana billaahi wa Malaaa’ikatihee wa Kutubihee wa Rusulihee laa nufarriqu bayna ahadim-mir Rusulih; wa qaaloo sami’naa wa ata’naa ghufraanaka Rabbanaa wa ilaykal-maseer. Translation: The Messenger has believed in what was revealed to him from his Lord, and [so have] the believers. All of them have believed in Allah and His angels and His books and His messengers, [saying], “We make no distinction between any of His messengers.” And they say, “We hear and we obey. [We seek] Your forgiveness, our Lord, and to You is the [final] destination.” Allah does not burden a soul beyond that it can bear. It will have [the consequence of] what [good] it has gained, and it will bear [the consequence of] what [evil] it has earned. Our Lord, do not impose blame upon us if we forget or make a mistake. Our Lord, and lay not upon us a burden like that which You laid upon those before us. Our Lord, and burden us not with that which we have no ability to bear. And pardon us; and forgive us; and have mercy upon us. You are our protector, so give us victory over the disbelieving people.

Translation: And We inspired to Moses, “Throw your staff,” and at once it devoured what they were falsifying. So the truth was established, and abolished was what they were doing. And they were defeated there and became debased. And the magicians fell down in prostration [to Allah]. They said, “We have believed in the Lord of the worlds, the Lord of Moses and Aaron.”

15. Surah Yunus (10:79-82)

Transliteration: Waqala firAAawnu itoonee bikulli sahirin AAaleemin Falamma jaa alssaharatu qala lahum moosa alqoo ma antum mulqoona, Falamma alqaw qala moosa ma jitum bihi alssihru inna Allaha sayubtiluhu inna Allaha la yuslihu AAamala almufsideena Wayuhiqqu Allahu alhaqqa bikalimatihi walaw kariha almujrimoona.

Translation: They said, “O Moses, either you throw [your staff], or we will be the first to throw.” He said, “Rather, you throw.” And suddenly their ropes and staffs seemed to him from their magic that they were moving [like snakes], and he sensed within himself apprehension. We [Allah] said, “Fear not. Indeed, it is you who are superior. And throw what is in your right hand; it will swallow up what they have crafted. What they have crafted is but the trick of a magician, and the magician will not succeed wherever he is.” So the magicians fell down in prostration. They said, “We have believed in the Lord of Aaron and Moses.”

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) about Ruqya

Q1: How can one incorporate Ruqya into their daily routine for ongoing spiritual protection?

  1. Morning and Evening Recitations: Start your day by reciting Ayat Al-Kursi (Quran 2:255) and the last two verses of Surah Al-Baqarah (2:285-286). Recite Surah Al-Ikhlas, Surah Al-Falaq, and Surah An-Nas three times each in the morning and before going to bed.
  2. Consistent Dhikr (Remembrance of Allah): Engage in daily Dhikr by repeating phrases like “SubhanAllah” (Glory be to Allah), “Alhamdulillah” (Praise be to Allah), “Allahu Akbar” (Allah is the Greatest), and “La ilaha illallah” (There is no deity but Allah).
  3. Supplications Before Sleep: Recite the Ruqya verses before sleeping to seek protection from harmful spiritual influences during the night.
  4. Intentional Reflection: Meditate on the meanings of the verses and their significance in your life. This can deepen your connection to the recitations and enhance their protective effects.
  5. Integrate in Daily Prayers: Incorporate specific Ruqya supplications in your prayers (Salat), especially during the prostration (Sujood) and after the final Tashahhud.
  6. Seek Knowledge and Guidance: Regularly learn about the benefits and proper methods of Ruqya from authentic sources and scholars at IQS.

Q2: What are the benefits of understanding the meanings of the verses recited during Ruqya?

  1. Enhanced Faith and Conviction: Understanding the meanings of the verses strengthens your faith in their power and in Allah’s ability to protect and heal.
  2. Deeper Connection: Comprehending the verses fosters a deeper spiritual connection and personal relationship with the Quran.
  3. Focused Intentions: Knowing the meanings helps you recite with sincere intentions, which is essential for the effectiveness of Ruqya.
  4. Increased Mindfulness: Being aware of the meanings encourages mindfulness during recitation, turning it into a form of meditation and reflection.
  5. Spiritual Empowerment: Understanding the divine wisdom behind the verses empowers you spiritually, providing comfort and confidence in times of distress.
  6. Holistic Healing: Recognizing the comprehensive nature of the Quranic verses aids in addressing both spiritual and emotional aspects of healing.

Q3: How does the practice of Ruqya compare to other forms of spiritual healing in different cultures and religions?

  1. Source of Authority: Ruqya is strictly based on the Quran and Sunnah, making it unique to Islam. In contrast, other forms of spiritual healing may rely on a variety of scriptures, traditions, or even mystical practices.
  2. Monotheistic Focus: Ruqya emphasizes Tawhid (the oneness of Allah) and rejects any form of shirk (associating partners with Allah), unlike some practices in other cultures that may involve invoking multiple deities or spirits.
  3. Scriptural Recitation: Ruqya involves direct recitation of specific Quranic verses and prophetic supplications. Other spiritual practices might include chanting mantras, using symbolic objects, or performing rituals.
  4. Intention and Sincerity: The effectiveness of Ruqya relies heavily on the intention (Niyyah) and faith (Iman) of the practitioner. Similarly, many other spiritual healing methods also emphasize the importance of the healer’s and recipient’s belief and intent.
  5. Accessibility and Simplicity: Ruqya can be performed by any Muslim with knowledge of the appropriate verses and intentions. In contrast, other traditions may require specialized training, initiation, or the presence of a spiritual leader or shaman.
  6. Ethical Boundaries: Ruqya strictly forbids practices involving superstition, magic, or harm to others. While other cultures may have different ethical guidelines, some practices might include elements that are not permissible in Islam.

Q1: What are some common challenges people face when starting to incorporate Ruqya into their daily routines, and how can they overcome them?

Challenges:

  1. Lack of Knowledge: Many people are unsure of the correct verses and methods for performing Ruqya.
  2. Inconsistency: It can be challenging to make Ruqya a regular part of daily life.
  3. Distractions and Time Management: Busy schedules and distractions can interfere with the practice of Ruqya.
  4. Doubt and Skepticism: Some may doubt the effectiveness of Ruqya due to lack of immediate results.

Overcoming Challenges:

  1. Seek Guidance: Learn from reputable sources and scholars. At the Institute of Quran and Sunnah (IQS), we offer courses and counseling to help you understand and practice Ruqya effectively.
  2. Set a Routine: Start with small, manageable recitations and gradually build up. Consistency is key, even if you begin with a few minutes each day.
  3. Create a Peaceful Environment: Find a quiet place and time for your recitations to minimize distractions. Making a specific time for Ruqya can help it become a habit.
  4. Strengthen Faith: Reflect on the meanings of the verses and have faith in their divine power. At IQS, we provide comprehensive Islamic counseling to help strengthen your faith and resolve.

Q2: Can the practice of Ruqya have psychological benefits in addition to spiritual ones, and how?

Yes, the practice of Ruqya can offer significant psychological benefits, including:

  1. Stress Relief: Reciting Quranic verses can have a calming effect, reducing anxiety and stress levels.
  2. Enhanced Mental Clarity: Regular recitation promotes mindfulness, helping to clear mental clutter and improve focus.
  3. Emotional Stability: Understanding and internalizing the meanings of the verses can provide emotional support and stability.
  4. Sense of Security: Believing in Allah’s protection through Ruqya can reduce fears and insecurities.

At IQS, we integrate Ruqya with holistic Islamic counseling to address both spiritual and psychological well-being. Our experts, including qualified Alim and Hafiz, guide you through the recitations, ensuring you reap both spiritual and psychological benefits.

Q3: What historical examples exist of Ruqya being used effectively in Islamic tradition, and what can we learn from them?

Historical Examples:

  1. Prophet Muhammad (PBUH): The Prophet himself used Ruqya for protection and healing. He would recite Surah Al-Falaq and Surah An-Nas over himself for protection from evil.
  2. Companions of the Prophet: Many companions, such as Abu Bakr and Umar, practiced Ruqya and recommended it to others. They used it for healing physical ailments and spiritual protection.
  3. Islamic Scholars: Throughout history, scholars like Ibn Taymiyyah and Ibn Qayyim Al-Jawziyya emphasized the importance of Ruqya and documented its benefits.

Lessons Learned:

  1. Consistency and Faith: The effectiveness of Ruqya lies in consistent practice and unwavering faith in Allah’s power.
  2. Knowledge and Application: Proper knowledge of the verses and their meanings enhances the practice. At IQS, we provide detailed instruction on the correct recitations and their applications.
  3. Holistic Approach: Combining Ruqya with other forms of Islamic worship, such as prayer and supplication, amplifies its benefits.
