The Takbeeraat of Dhul-Hijjah: A Time to Glorify and Reflect

Alhamdulillaah, the most blessed and virtuous days of the entire year are upon us. The first ten days of Dhul-Hijjah are an extraordinary opportunity for Muslims around the world to engage in increased worship and good deeds. These days are a gift from Allah (SWT), offering immense rewards and the chance to draw closer to our Creator.

Takbeeraat

The Prophet Muhammad (sal Allaahu Alayhi wa Sallam) emphasized the unparalleled significance of these days, stating: “There are no days in which righteous deeds are more beloved to Allaah than these ten days.” This declaration highlights the immense value of any act of worship performed during this period, surpassing even the merits of jihad, except for those who sacrifice everything for the cause of Allah and return with nothing.

As we embark on these blessed days, it’s crucial to reflect on their importance and seize every moment to magnify Allah’s name through the recitation of Takbeeraat. This practice, deeply rooted in our tradition, serves as a powerful reminder of Allah’s greatness and our gratitude for His countless blessings.

At the Institute of Quran and Sunnah (IQS), we believe in enriching the spiritual journey of every Muslim. Through our comprehensive Islamic courses, we aim to deepen your understanding and enhance your practice of faith, especially during these sacred days. Join us as we explore the significance of Takbeeraat and other acts of worship during these exceptional days, and discover how you can make the most of this blessed time.

These are days by which Allaah Subhaanahu wa Ta’aala took an oath; they are the days in which the last aayah in the Qur’aan was revealed; they culminate in the remembrance of Prophet Ibraheem’s sacrifice.

Importance of Takbeeraat

One of the good deeds we can do in these glorious days is to MAGNIFY Allaah during the day and night by saying the Takbeeraat. Saying the takbeeraat during the first ten days of Dhul Hijjah and the next four days of Eid al-Adhaa is one of the greatest ways to worship Allaah and thank Him. It is also one of the greatest Sunnahs for these magnificent days. AND it’s Allaah’s Order.

🍃Allaah says:
“and MENTION the Name of Allaah on APPOINTED days”
[al-Hajj 22:28]

🍃And Allaah says:
“And REMEMBER Allaah during the APPOINTED Days”
[al-Baqarah 2:203]

These “APPOINTED” days are the days of Dhul Hijjah from the 1st till the 13th.

📌 WISDOM behind the Takbeeraat during first ten days of Dhul Hijjah

🍃 The Prophet ﷺ said:
“A person does not ever make Talbiyah [for those on Hajj] except that he is given glad tidings, nor does a person ever say Takbeer [Allaahu Akbar] except that he is given glad tidings.’
It was asked: ‘With Paradise?’
He answered: ‘Yes.’
(at-Tabarani; hasan by al-Albaani in Silsilah as-Saheehah1621)

🍃 And Umar ibn al-Khattaab and ‘Abd-Allaah ibn Umair Radhi Allaahu anhumaa used to recite Takbeer during the days of Mina in the masjid and in the camps, and they would raise their voices until Mina ECHOED with their Takbeer.

🍃 Al-Khattabi said:
‘The wisdom behind saying Takbeer (Allaahu Akbar) in these ten days of Dhul Hijjah is that in the time of Jahileeyyah they used to slaughter for their false gods in those ten days. So, saying Takbeer (Allaahu Akbar) in the ten days of Dhul Hijjah was legislated as an indication to specifically slaughtering for Allaah and upon His Name -The Magnificent and the Majestic.’
(Fath al-Bari 2/535)

Allaahu Akbar! How can we thank you, Yaa Allaah, for the blessing You bestowed upon us of Imaan and Tawheed? How can we thank you for these beautiful days of worship and good deeds?

How can we show you that it is You Alone that we worship? And that we are grateful to You for all that you bestowed upon us EXCEPT by Glorifying You, Yaa Rabb, and Exalting Your Mention?

All Praise is for You, Yaa Kareem, Yaa Rabb al-Aalameen, for giving us this chance to worship You and ask for Your forgiveness and have our sins forgiven!

🍃“Ibn ‘Umar and Abu Hurayrah radhi Allaahu anhumaa used to go out to the market-place on first ten days of Dhu’l-Hijjah, reciting Takbeer, and the people used to recite Takbeer because of their Takbeer.”
(al-Bukhaari)

🍃 Maymoon ibn Mihran (from amongst the Successors [Tabi’een]) said:
“I remember a time when the people would perform their Takbeeraat so much during the ten days that I would compare it (the sound of their voices) to waves.”

What to say?

‎ “الله أكبر الله أكبر الله أكبر، لا إله إلا الله، والله أكبر الله أكبر، ولله الحمد”

“Allaah is Most Great, Allaah is Most Great, there is no god except Allaah, Allaah is Most Great, Allaah is Most Great, and all praise be to Allaah”

“Allaah is most Great, much praise be to Allaah and glory be to Allaah at the beginning and end of the day. Allaah is most Great and we worship none but Allaah, and we make our worship purely for Him (alone) however much the disbelievers may hate that. There is no god but Allaah alone; He fulfilled His promise and granted victory to His slave and defeated the Confederates alone. There is no God but Allaah and Allaah is most Great.”

Allaahu Akbar!

When to start the Takbeeraat?

The takbeeraat of Eid al-Adhaa begin at sunset when the moon of Dhul Hijjah is sighted and last until the sun sets on the 13th of Dhul Hijjah. That means we should have already started saying the Takbeeraat from sunset last night.

🍃 Allaah says:
“That they may witness things that are of benefit to them (i.e. reward of Hajj in the Hereafter, and also some worldly gain from trade), and mention the Name of Allaah on appointed days”
[al-Hajj 22:28]

These “appointed days” are the first ten days of Dhul Hijjah.

🍃And Allaah says:
“And remember Allaah during the “appointed” Days [These are the three days of staying at Mina during the Hajj; 11th, 12th and 13th days of the month of Dhul-Hijjah]”
[al-Baqarah 2:203]

These “appointed” Days are the days of Tashreeq (11th, 12th and 13th of Dhul-Hijjah).

🍃 And the Prophet Sal Allaahu Alaiyhi wa Sallam said:
“The days of Tashreeq are the days of eating, drinking and REMEMBERING Allaah.”
(Muslim)

🍃Shaikh Ibn Baaz said:
“With regard to Takbeer on (Eid al-Ad’haa), it is prescribed from the beginning of the month until the end of the thirteenth day of Dhu’l-Hijjah.”
(Kitaab Majmoo’ Fataawa Wa Maqaalaat Mutanawwi’ah Li Samaahat Vol. 13, P. 17)

Two types of Takbeeraat

The Takbeeraat are of TWO KINDS:

1. “General” or “UNrestricted” Takbeeraat
These are said ANY time, ALL the time, during the day and night.

2. Specified or “Restricted” Takbeeraat
These Takbeeraat are said specifically AFTER EVERY FARDH Salaah, immediately after the salaam. These Takbeeraat are to be said from Fajr of the 9th of Dhul Hijjah until Maghrib of the 13th of this month.

🍃Shaikh Ibn Uthaymeen explains:
“The takbeer is divided into two categories:

1. Takbeer at any time.
This is takbeer that is not limited to a specific time, and it is Sunnah to say it all the time, morning and evening, before prayer and after prayer, at all times. It is Sunnah to recite takbeer at “any time” during the first ten days of Dhu’l-Hijjah and all the days of Tashreeq, starting from the beginning of the month

of Dhu’l-Hijjah (i.e., from sunset on the last day of Dhu’l-Qa’dah) until the end of the days of al-Tashreeq, which is when the sun sets on the thirteenth day of Dhu’l-Hijjah).

2. Takbeer at certain times.
This is takbeer that is limited to the time immediately after prayer.

With regard to takbeeraat at “certain” times, it starts from Fajr on the day of ‘Arafah (9th of Dhul Hijjah) and lasts until the sun sets on the last day of the days of Tashreeq (13th of Dhul Hijjah) in addition to the takbeer that may be recited at any time.

So when a person says the tasleem at the end of the obligatory prayer, he should pray for forgiveness (by saying Astaghfirullaah) three times, and say, “Allaahumma anta al-salaam wa minka al-salaam, tabaarakta yaa dhaa’l-jalaali wa’l-ikraam

(“O Allaah, You are al-Salaam [the One Who is free from all defects and deficiencies], and from You is all peace, blessed are You, O possessor of majesty and honor)”, then he should start the takbeer. This is for those who are NOT on Hajj.

The pilgrims should start the takbeer recited after prayer from Dhuhr on the Day of Sacrifice (the 10th of Dhu’l-Hijjah).”
[al-Sharh al-Mumti’ 5/220-224]

Should I say the Takbeeraat LOUD or SOFT?

Brothers should raise their voices reciting this dhikr, wherever they may be, but sisters should say it softly, without raising their voices. But if the sisters are at home, among Mahrams, they can say the Takbeeraat out loud as well.

So Come on! Let us take advantage of these beautiful days of opportunity.

GLORIFY your Rabb, and MAGNIFY His Praise and EXALT His Name as MUCH as you can. Sitting, walking, eating, driving, working, cleaning, cooking… Keep saying it.

Don’t be heedless

For you are in the Blessed days of the sacred month of Dhul Hijjah

So if some time passes by you, moments wherein you haven’t remembered Allāh

So hurry to Awaken your heart with Takbeer (Allahu Akbar) Tahleel (La ilaaha il Allah) Tahmeed (Alhamdulillah) Tasbeeh (SubhaanAllah) or Istighfaar(Astaghfirullah)

For heedlessness is an illness
And Remembering Allah is a medicine and cure

Everytime you move your lips, keep repeating
سبحان الله و بحمده سبحان الله العظيم
Subhaan Allaahi wa bihamdihi Subhaan Allaahil Adheem
How perfect is Allah and all Praise is for Him
How perfect is Allāh The Almighty

Remember that the ones who passed away wish to return one day to say these words for they are light on the tongue and heavy on the scale and beloved to Ar Rahmaan.

May Allah not deprive us of remembering Him, thanking Him and worshipping Him in the best way.

Be a reason to remind others.
