Beginning of the Islamic New Year
The Significance of Muharram
Muharram is among the four sacred months chosen by Allah سبحانه وتعالى. It is a month of immense virtue and an opportunity for believers to increase worship, fasting, remembrance of Allah, and righteous deeds.
“Indeed, the number of months with Allah is twelve months in the register of Allah since the day He created the heavens and the earth; of these, four are sacred.” (Surah At-Tawbah 9:36)
The sacred status of Muharram reminds Muslims to avoid sins, increase obedience to Allah, and strive for spiritual growth throughout the year.
Virtues of Fasting in Muharram
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ encouraged fasting during this blessed month.
“The best fasting after Ramadan is fasting in Allah’s month of Muharram.”
(Sahih Muslim)
Many Muslims especially observe fasting on the Day of Ashura (10th Muharram), following the Sunnah of the Prophet ﷺ. This day carries great rewards and serves as a reminder of Allah’s help and victory granted to Prophet Musa عليه السلام and the believers.
Beginning the New Hijri Year Correctly
The arrival of a new Islamic year should inspire every Muslim to evaluate their worship, character, and relationship with Allah. While no specific acts of worship are prescribed solely for the beginning of the year, it is an excellent opportunity to:
- Renew sincere tawbah (repentance).
- Increase Quran recitation and reflection.
- Improve consistency in Salah.
- Strengthen family ties.
- Seek beneficial Islamic knowledge.
- Set goals for personal and spiritual growth.
- Increase voluntary fasting and charity.
“Whoever follows a path seeking knowledge, Allah will make a path to Paradise easy for him.”
(Sahih Muslim)
