Hadith reminder

The Prophet said: “The sun and the moon do not eclipse because of the death or birth of anyone; they are two signs among the signs of Allah. When you see them, stand and pray.” This authentic report underpins the Sunnah of Salat al-Khusuf during an eclipse. [1][2]

How to pray

• Pray two rak’ahs; in each rak’ah recite Al-Fatihah and a long surah, then make a long ruku’, stand again to recite Al-Fatihah and a shorter surah, then perform sujud twice; recitation is done aloud. [1][3]
• The first standing can be long (e.g., length of Al-Baqarah), with subsequent recitations shorter; each ruku’ is lengthy but the second is shorter than the first. [1][2]
• It is Sunnah to deliver an admonition/khutbah after the prayer, encouraging du‘a, istighfar, charity, and remembrance. [1][2]

Timing and congregation

• The time for Salat al-Khusuf is from the beginning of the lunar eclipse until it clears; it is recommended to join the congregation without adhan or iqamah, announcing “as-salatu jami‘ah.” [2][1]
• Praying in congregation is Sunnah and superior, though it may be prayed individually if needed. [1][2]

Etiquettes and recommended acts

• Engage in du‘a, seek forgiveness, and give charity during this sign of Allah, as taught in prophetic guidance on eclipses. [1][2]
• Taking ghusl and coming to the masjid calmly while magnifying Allah are from recommended etiquettes mentioned by jurists. [2][4]

Hadith

حَدَّثَنَا شِهَابُ بْنُ عَبَّادٍ، حَدَّثَنَا إِبْرَاهِيمُ بْنُ حُمَيْدٍ، عَنْ إِسْمَاعِيلَ، عَنْ قَيْسٍ، قَالَ سَمِعْتُ أَبَا مَسْعُودٍ، يَقُولُ قَالَ النَّبِيُّ صلى الله عليه وسلم ‏”‏ إِنَّ الشَّمْسَ وَالْقَمَرَ لاَ يَنْكَسِفَانِ لِمَوْتِ أَحَدٍ مِنَ النَّاسِ، وَلَكِنَّهُمَا آيَتَانِ مِنْ آيَاتِ اللَّهِ، فَإِذَا رَأَيْتُمُوهُمَا فَقُومُوا فَصَلُّوا ‏”‏‏.‏
 
Narrated Abu Mas`ud:
The Prophet (ﷺ) said, “The sun and the moon do not eclipse because of the death of someone from the people but they are two signs amongst the signs of Allah. When you see them stand up and pray.”
