Ultimate Guide to Ruqya: Quranic Healing & Sunnah Practices for Spiritual Protection

How To Perform Ruqyah: A Complete Guide Based on Quran and Sunnah

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful

Ruqyah is a powerful form of spiritual healing prescribed in Islam, involving the recitation of Quranic verses and prophetic supplications to seek Allah’s protection and cure from spiritual and physical ailments. This comprehensive guide presents the authentic Islamic approach to ruqyah based on the Quran, Sunnah, and the understanding of the Salaf as-Salih.

Understanding Ruqyah: The Islamic Foundation

Ruqyah refers to the practice of treating illnesses through Quranic verses and supplications prescribed by the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. It serves as a means of cure for evil eye, black magic, jinn possession, and various physical ailments. The practice is firmly rooted in Islamic teachings, as Allah states in the Quran:

“And We send down in the Qur’ān that which is a cure and a mercy for the believers” (Quran 17:82)

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: “Make good use of the two cures: honey and the Qur’ān”. This establishes ruqyah as one of the most powerful forms of healing available to believers.

Prerequisites for Effective Ruqyah

  1. Strengthen Your Aqeedah (Creed)

Your belief system forms the foundation of effective ruqyah. Ensure your aqeedah is sound and based on Tawheed (the Oneness of Allah). The ruqyah must be performed with complete conviction that Allah alone has the power to cure and protect.

  1. Establish and Maintain the Five Daily Prayers

Regular prayer creates a spiritual shield against evil forces. The five daily prayers are fundamental to maintaining your connection with Allah and seeking His continuous protection.

  1. Perform Morning and Evening Adhkar

The morning and evening remembrances provide powerful protection against shaytan and evil influences. These should be recited:

Morning Adhkar: Between Fajr and sunrise (ideally)
Evening Adhkar: Between Asr and Maghrib (ideally)

The Prophet ﷺ said: “That I sit with people remembering Allah from Fajr until sunrise is more beloved to me than freeing four slaves from amongst the Children of Ismā’īl. That I sit with people remembering Allah from ‘Asr until the sun sets is more beloved to me than freeing four slaves from amongst the Children of Ismā’īl”.

Essential Daily Practices for Ruqyah Effectiveness

  1. Consume Seven Ajwa Dates Every Morning

The Prophet ﷺ said: “Whoever eats seven Ajwa dates in the morning, neither magic nor poison will harm him that day” (Sahih al-Bukhari 5445). This practice provides divine protection against black magic and harmful substances.

  1. Fast on Mondays and Thursdays

Regular fasting purifies the body and soul, making the person less susceptible to spiritual attacks. The Prophet ﷺ regularly observed this voluntary fast.

  1. Hijama (Cupping Therapy)

Cupping is an emphasized Sunnah that helps remove physical and spiritual impurities from the body. The Prophet ﷺ said: “Indeed the best of remedies you have is cupping (hijama)” (Sahih al-Bukhari 5371). When the Prophet ﷺ was afflicted with magic, he performed cupping along with ruqyah.

Recommended cupping days: 17th, 19th, or 21st of the Islamic lunar month, particularly when these coincide with Monday, Tuesday, or Thursday.

Spiritual Purification and Environment

  1. Increase in Du’a and Dhikr

Constant remembrance of Allah creates a protective barrier against evil forces. The more you remember Allah, the stronger your spiritual defense becomes.

  1. Give Abundant Charity

Charity wards off calamity and brings Allah’s blessings. The Prophet ﷺ said: “Treat your sick by giving Sadaqah” (Bayhaqi).

  1. Place Complete Trust in Allah

Your reliance must be solely on Allah, not on His creation. True Tawheed requires absolute dependence on Allah for protection and healing.

  1. Remove Prohibited Items from Your Home

Eliminate all forms of shirk and haram from your environment:

  • No taweez or amulets: The Prophet ﷺ said: “Whoever wears an amulet has committed shirk” (Musnad Ahmed). Even amulets containing Quranic verses are prohibited according to the stronger scholarly opinion.
  • No pictures or statues: Remove all animate pictures, including photographs and paintings of living beings
  • No dogs in the house: Angels of mercy do not enter homes with dogs
  • No music or inappropriate entertainment: Avoid movies, music, and content containing haram elements

Specific Remedies and Treatments

  1. Senna Leaves for Physical Symptoms

When experiencing movement of jinn in the body or bloating, consume senna leaves. The Prophet ﷺ said: “If anything were to cure death, it would be senna” (Tirmidhi). Boil senna leaves in water, allow to cool, add honey, recite ruqyah over the mixture, and drink on an empty stomach for seven days.

  1. Zamzam Water with Ruqyah Intention

Drink abundant Zamzam water with the specific intention of healing from jinn possession or seeking protection. The Prophet ﷺ said: “The water of Zamzam is for whatever it is drunk for” (Ibn Majah). Recite ruqyah verses over the water before drinking.

  1. Immediate Repentance from All Sins

Any regular sins you are committing must be stopped immediately. Sins create openings for shaytan and weaken your spiritual defenses.

Prohibited Practices in Ruqyah

What NOT to do during ruqyah:

  1. Never Communicate with Jinn

Do not talk to jinn or trust anything they say. They are categorical liars and only seek to delay the ruqyah process.

  1. Maintain Islamic Boundaries
  • Never give personal information to the one performing ruqyah
  • Maintain proper hijab boundaries between non-mahrams
  • No inappropriate touching or exposure of awrah
  1. Avoid Shirk Practices
  • Never call upon names of scholars, saints, or religious figures
  • Do not use taweez or amulets for protection
  • Avoid attempting to “catch” or transfer jinn
  1. No Physical Harm

Never strike or beat the possessed person during ruqyah.

Method of Performing Ruqyah

Prerequisites before ruqyah:

  • Perform wudu (ablution)
  • Offer two rak’ahs of prayer
  • Make sincere istighfar (seek forgiveness)
  • Give sadaqah if possible

During ruqyah:

  • Recite verses loudly and clearly with conviction
  • Blow gently into your hands after recitation
  • Wipe hands over the affected area or entire body
  • For water ruqyah: recite over water while breathing into it, then drink or bathe

Essential conditions for success:

  1. Correct intention: Seek healing from Allah alone
  2. Strong conviction (Yaqin): Complete faith in Allah’s power to heal
  3. Patience and consistency: Regular daily practice

Special Treatments and Baths

Sidr (Lote Tree) Bath

Grind seven green Sidr leaves, soak in water, recite ruqyah over the mixture, drink three sips, then bathe with the remaining water. This method is mentioned by Ibn Hajar and can be repeated daily until cured by Allah’s will.

Olive Oil Treatment

Recite ruqyah verses over olive oil and apply to the body, particularly areas of pain or discomfort.

The Prophetic Du’a for Healing

When the Prophet ﷺ was ill, he would recite this powerful supplication:

“اللَّهُمَّ رَبَّ النَّاسِ، أَذْهَبِ البَأْسَ، وَاشْفِ أَنْتَ الشَّافِي، لَا شِفَاءَ إِلَّا شِفَاؤُكَ، شِفَاءً لَا يُغَادِرُ سَقَمًا”

“O Allah! Lord of mankind! Remove the suffering and grant cure. You are the One who cures. There is no cure besides Your cure. Grant a cure that leaves no ailment behind” (Sahih al-Bukhari, Sahih Muslim)

Maintaining Long-term Protection

Daily protective practices:

  • Continue morning and evening adhkar
  • Regular recitation of Surah Al-Baqarah in the home
  • Maintain the five daily prayers
  • Stay in a state of wudu when possible
  • Regular dhikr and du’a throughout the day

The morning and evening adhkar serve as a spiritual shield. Ibn al-Qayyim رحمه الله said: “The morning and evening adhkār play the role of a shield; the thicker it is, the more its owner is protected”.

Conclusion

Ruqyah is a comprehensive system of spiritual healing that requires dedication, consistency, and unwavering faith in Allah. By implementing these practices based on authentic Islamic sources, you create multiple layers of protection against spiritual harm while seeking Allah’s healing and blessings.

Remember that ruqyah is not merely a ritual but a way of life that brings you closer to Allah. The combination of proper aqeedah, regular worship, environmental purification, and specific remedies creates a powerful defense against all forms of spiritual and physical ailments.

May Allah grant healing to all those who are afflicted and guide us to implement His divine guidance in our lives. The path of ruqyah is the path of complete reliance on Allah, and in Him alone lies all cure and protection.
