Friendship Day in Islam: An Authentic Perspective

In Islam, friendship is highly valued and guided by the teachings of the Quran and Sunnah. While there is no specific celebration such as “Friendship Day” in Islamic tradition, the essence of friendship permeates the teachings of our faith, shaping our character and strengthening our community bonds.

The Islamic Spirit of Friendship

  • True friendship in Islam is based on sincerity (ikhlas), loyalty, and a shared goal of pleasing Allah. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:

“A person is likely to follow the faith of his friend, so be careful whom you befriend.”
(Abu Dawud)

  • Choosing good friends is crucial, as friends influence our behavior, faith, and character. On the Day of Judgement, Allah says in the Quran:

“Close friends, that Day, will be enemies to each other, except for the righteous (al-Muttaqoon).”
(Quran 43:67)

  • Good companions support us in righteousness, help us grow spiritually, and remind us of Allah. True friends are those who bring us closer to Allah, not further away.

Is Celebrating “Friendship Day” Permissible in Islam?

There is no basis for celebrating dedicated days like “Friendship Day” in Islam. Such celebrations are not part of our tradition and may be considered as imitating practices not rooted in the Quran or Sunnah. Instead, Islam encourages us to always maintain, honor, and cherish our relationships every day.

Muslims are guided to:

  • Appreciate and pray for their friends regularly.
  • Build lasting bonds based on mutual love for the sake of Allah.
  • Offer sincere advice, forgiveness, and compassion without waiting for a specific occasion.

Etiquettes of Islamic Friendship

  • Be loyal, trustworthy, and supportive—especially in trials.
  • Forgive each other’s shortcomings and conceal faults.
  • Encourage and inspire each other towards goodness.
  • Pray for your friends’ well-being, success, and guidance.
