Mutawatir Hadiths
The concept of mutawatir (متواتر) hadith refers to narrations transmitted by such a large number of narrators at each level of the chain that it would be impossible for them to have collectively fabricated the report. These are considered the highest level of authentic hadiths in Islamic tradition.
Collections of Mutawatir Hadiths
Several scholars have compiled collections of mutawatir hadiths:
- Jalaluddin Suyuti’s Collections:
- “Qatf al-Azhar al-Mutanathara fi al-Akhbar al-Mutawatirah” – contains 113 mutawatir hadiths[3]
- “Al-Fawa’id al-Mutakathira” – contains approximately 100 narrations[6]
- “Al-Azhar al-Mutanathira” – an abridgment of al-Fawa’id al-Mutakathira[6]
- Other Collections:
- “Al-Nazm al-Mutanathir” by Sayyid Ja’far al-Kattani – contains approximately 310 narrations[6]
- “Al-Aali al-Mutanathira” by Sham al-Din Muhammad ibn Tulun[6]
- “Luqat al-Aali al-Mutanathira” by Murtadha al-Zabidi[6]
Notable Mutawatir Hadiths
While it’s not possible to list all mutawatir hadiths, here are some notable examples:
Mutawatir in Wording (Mutawatir al-Lafzi):
- “Whoever intentionally attributes a lie against me, should prepare his seat in the Fire.” – Narrated by at least 74 companions and transmitted by hundreds in later generations[1][3][4]
Mutawatir in Meaning (Mutawatir al-Ma’Nawi):
- Hadiths about the Pond of Kawthar – narrated by approximately 50 companions[3]
- “Whoever built a mosque for the sake of Allah, will have Allah build for him a house in Paradise” – narrated by about 25 companions[3]
- “Every intoxicant is forbidden”[3]
- “He who deceived us is not of us”[3]
- “Do your Fajr in as much close to morning light as possible”[3]
- “Islam started as a stranger and will end as a stranger”[3]
- “A group of my Ummah will remain on the Truth until Allah’s command (the Hour) comes”[3]
- “May Allah keep bright the face of him who heard from us our words and then passed them on as he heard” – narrated by around 30 companions[3]
- Hadiths about raising hands when making du’aa – nearly 100 hadiths with this meaning[4]
- Al-Ghadir Sermon – narrated by one hundred companions[5]
- Hadith al-Thaqalayn – narrated by eighty narrators from among the companions[5]
Practical Mutawatir:
- Hadiths establishing the five daily prayers and their proper form[2][5]
- Hadiths about fasting[2]
- Hadiths about Zakaat[2]
- Hadiths about Hajj pilgrimage[2]
- Hadiths concerning the recitation of the Quran[2]
- Narrations about the characteristics of Hazrat Ali[5]
Number of Mutawatir Hadiths
The total number of mutawatir hadiths is estimated to be between 100 and 310[6]. Mutawatir hadiths in meaning are more numerous than mutawatir hadiths in wording, which some scholars like Imam Nawawi and Ibn Salah consider rare[6].
According to Islamic scholars, a mutawatir report has the highest level of authenticity, considered nearly as certain as the Qur’an itself, and rejection of a mutawatir hadith is considered a serious matter in Islamic jurisprudence[3][5].
