Celebrating Eid with Haya: Reviving the Prophetic Spirit of Modesty

As we bid farewell to Ramadan’s spiritual intensity, Eid al-Fitr emerges as both a celebration and a test of our commitment to Islamic principles. At the Institute of Quran and Sunnah (IQS), we emphasize that true joy lies in obedience to Allah (SWT), not in compromising modesty. Let us explore how Quranic wisdom and Prophetic teachings guide us to preserve haya (modesty) during Eid celebrations.

The Quranic Foundation of Modesty

Allah (SWT) commands in Surah An-Nur:
“Tell the believing men to lower their gaze and guard their private parts… And tell the believing women to lower their gaze and guard their private parts, and not display their adornment except what [normally] appears.” (24:30-31)[2]

This divine injunction applies equally to Eid prayers and daily life. The Quran further instructs:
“O Prophet! Tell your wives, daughters, and believing women to draw their cloaks over their bodies. This makes them more likely to be recognized as virtuous and not harassed.” (33:59)[2][6]

IQS Course Highlight: Our Advanced Islamic Studies Program delves deep into Quranic modesty principles, helping students contextualize these verses in modern celebrations.

Haya: The Heart of Faith

The Prophet ﷺ declared:
“Faith has over seventy branches, the highest being La ilaha illallah, and the lowest being removing harmful objects from roads. Haya is part of faith.” (Muslim)[1][5]

Ibn Al-Qayyim beautifully analogized: “Just as the body needs life, the heart needs haya.”[1] This spiritual modesty should manifest in:

  • Dress: Avoiding tight/revealing clothing despite cultural trends
  • Conduct: Maintaining dignified speech and behavior
  • Worship: Focusing on prayer rather than socializing during Khutbah

IQS Workshop: Join our Sunnah Lifestyle Program to implement Prophetic modesty in celebrations and daily life.

Three Prophetic Warnings for Eid

  1. The Perfume Prohibition
“Any woman who perfumes herself and passes by people is an adulteress.” (Ahmad 19212)[1]
  2. Clothed Yet Naked
“Women who dress yet appear naked… will not enter Paradise.” (Muslim 2128)[1][5]
  3. Social Media Modesty
Extended Principle: The Prophet ﷺ warned against “those who invite others to misguidance” (Muslim 4831)[1]. This applies to posting immodest Eid photos online.

IQS Solution: Our Islamic Counseling Services help address modern modesty challenges through Quran-based strategies.

The Forgotten Eid Etiquettes

1. Khutbah: A Time for Reflection, Not Conversation

Allah reminds us: “Magnify Allah for having guided you, so you may be grateful.” (2:185)[3]

2. Child Education

The Prophet ﷺ said: “Every child is born on fitrah.” (Bukhari). Set examples through modest family Eid attire.

3. Gratitude Through Action

Ibn Abbas (RA) taught: “True gratitude protects blessings.” Celebrate through charity, not extravagance.

IQS Family Program: Enroll children in our Beginners Islamic Course to nurture haya from early age.

Sustaining Ramadan’s Legacy

As noted in Sahih Muslim:
“The most beloved deeds to Allah are consistent ones, even if small.”

Eid marks not an end, but a beginning. Continue your spiritual journey through:
