Why Islam’s Prohibition on Photography Protects Us Today

Islam’s Prohibition on Image-Making
Islam has always emphasized modesty and protection of personal dignity. The Prophet ﷺ strongly warned against image-making, and today, we can clearly see the wisdom in this ruling as AI is being used to create harmful and immoral content.
Relevant Hadith:
- Severe Warning for Image Makers:
The Prophet ﷺ said:
“The most severely punished people on the Day of Judgment will be those who make images (of living beings).”
(Sahih al-Bukhari 5950, Sahih Muslim 2109) - Angels Do Not Enter Houses with Pictures:
The Prophet ﷺ said:
“The angels do not enter a house in which there is a dog or pictures (of living beings).”
(Sahih al-Bukhari 5949, Sahih Muslim 2106) - Destruction of Images:
When the Prophet ﷺ entered the Kaaba after its conquest, he destroyed all idols and images inside it, emphasizing their prohibition. (Sahih al-Bukhari 2478)
Modern Fitnah: AI Manipulation of Images
With AI, people can take a simple image and modify it in ways that can ruin reputations, destroy families, and cause immense psychological harm. Deepfake technology can generate inappropriate images, frame innocent people in false scandals, and violate privacy on an unprecedented scale.
Even if a person is modest in real life, their digital presence can be manipulated without their consent. This is why Islam’s wisdom in discouraging image-making and unnecessary photography protects us from such dangers.
A Call to Action: Protect Yourself & Your Family
- Delete all unnecessary pictures of yourself and your family from social media.
- Avoid sharing personal images online, even in private groups.
