Why You May Be Missing Out on Knowledge
Reasons for Being Deprived of Knowledge
Ibn al-Qayyim رحمه الله said:
One is deprived of knowledge due to six reasons:
- Not Asking Questions
The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: “The cure for ignorance is questioning” (Sunan Abi Dawood 336, Jami` at-Tirmidhi 2859). - Not Listening Well
The Quran advises, “So give good news to My servants who listen to the speech and follow the best of it” (Quran 39:17-18). - Not Understanding Well
Allah says, “Indeed, in that are signs for a people who reason” (Quran 16:12). Proper understanding requires reflection and reasoning. - Lack of Memorization
The Prophet ﷺ said: “May Allah make radiant the man who has heard what I have said, has remembered it, and has conveyed it as he heard it” (Jami` at-Tirmidhi 2657). - Lack of Propagation and Teaching
The Prophet ﷺ said: “Convey from me, even if it is one verse” (Sahih Bukhari 3461). Hoarding knowledge without teaching it results in its loss, as a trial from Allah. - Not Acting Upon It
Acting upon knowledge strengthens its retention. The Quran emphasizes, “And those who were given knowledge will know that it (the Quran) is the truth from your Lord and will believe therein, and their hearts will be humbly submissive to it” (Quran 22:54).
Some of the Salaf said: We used to seek assistance in preserving knowledge by acting upon it.
Additional Points on Being Deprived of Knowledge
Ibn al-Qayyim رحمه الله identified six core reasons why individuals may be deprived of knowledge. Here, we expand on these points and add further insights:
- Procrastination and Laziness
Procrastination can severely hinder one’s ability to acquire and retain knowledge. The Prophet ﷺ warned against laziness and procrastination, emphasizing the importance of taking action promptly. Allah says in the Quran, “And hasten to forgiveness from your Lord and a garden as wide as the heavens and earth” (Quran 3:133). - Poor Time Management
Effective time management is crucial for gaining knowledge. Wasting time on trivial matters can lead to missed opportunities for learning. The Prophet ﷺ said, “There are two blessings which many people lose: health and free time for doing good” (Sahih Bukhari 6412). - Lack of Consistency
Consistency is key to mastering any subject. The Prophet ﷺ said, “The most beloved deed to Allah is the most regular and constant, even if it were little” (Sahih Bukhari 6465). Regular, consistent study sessions help in better retention and understanding. - Negative Company
Being in the company of those who do not value knowledge can influence one’s own attitudes and behaviors. The Prophet ﷺ said, “A man follows the religion of his friend; so each one should consider whom he makes his friend” (Sunan Abi Dawood 4833). - Distractions and Lack of Focus
In today’s digital age, distractions are plentiful. The ability to focus is critical for deep learning. Allah mentions in the Quran the importance of focusing on prayer, “So woe to those who pray [but] are heedless of their prayer” (Quran 107:4-5), highlighting the value of concentration in all aspects of worship and learning. - Failure to Reflect and Contemplate
Reflecting on what one learns is essential for true understanding. The Quran encourages contemplation: “Do they not reflect upon the Quran, or are there locks upon [their] hearts?” (Quran 47:24). Deep reflection allows for a better grasp of knowledge and its practical applications. - Ignoring Practical Application
Knowledge without application is like a tree that bears no fruit. The Prophet ﷺ said, “The example of those who take the guidance from knowledge and then do not act upon it is like the example of a people who take provisions, and then do not use them for their journey” (Sahih Muslim 2865).
By understanding and addressing these additional points, one can significantly enhance their learning experience and prevent the deprivation of valuable knowledge.
Further Insights on Being Deprived of Knowledge
In addition to the previously mentioned points, here are more factors that can lead to being deprived of knowledge:
- Overindulgence in Worldly Pleasures
Excessive indulgence in worldly pleasures can distract one from the pursuit of knowledge. The Quran warns, “Know that the life of this world is but amusement and diversion and adornment and boasting to one another and competition in increase of wealth and children” (Quran 57:20). A balanced approach is necessary to ensure that worldly pursuits do not overshadow the quest for knowledge. - Arrogance and Pride
Arrogance can be a significant barrier to learning. Allah says in the Quran, “I will turn away from My signs those who are arrogant upon the earth without right” (Quran 7:146). Humility is essential for learning, as it opens the heart and mind to new information and perspectives. - Lack of Sincerity
Sincerity in seeking knowledge is crucial. The intention behind acquiring knowledge should be to please Allah and benefit oneself and others. The Prophet ﷺ said, “Actions are judged by intentions” (Sahih Bukhari 1). A sincere intention ensures that the pursuit of knowledge is blessed and fruitful. - Insufficient Resources
Sometimes, the lack of access to adequate resources can hinder knowledge acquisition. It is important to seek out quality educational materials, teachers, and environments that facilitate learning. The Institute of Quran and Sunnah offers comprehensive courses and Islamic Counselling services to support your learning journey. - Environmental Factors
The environment in which one studies can greatly impact their ability to learn. A noisy or disruptive environment can make it difficult to concentrate and retain information. Creating a quiet, dedicated study space can enhance focus and productivity. - Health Issues
Physical and mental health problems can affect one’s capacity to learn. It is important to take care of one’s health and seek appropriate treatment if needed. The Prophet ﷺ said, “Ask Allah for forgiveness and health, for after being granted certainty, one is given nothing better than health” (Sunan Ibn Majah 3841). - Negative Self-Belief
Believing that one is incapable of learning can be a self-fulfilling prophecy. Confidence and a positive mindset are important for success in any endeavor. The Quran encourages believers, “Do not lose hope, nor be sad” (Quran 3:139), emphasizing the importance of maintaining a hopeful and positive outlook. - Not Seeking Allah’s Help
Ultimately, knowledge is a gift from Allah. Seeking His help and making du’a (supplication) for guidance and understanding is essential. The Prophet ﷺ often made the du’a, “O Allah, benefit me with what You have taught me and teach me that which will benefit me and increase me in knowledge” (Sunan Ibn Majah 3833).
By addressing these additional factors, one can further enhance their ability to acquire and retain knowledge effectively.
