The Correct Dua and Method of Qurbani According to Islam, Qurbani Ki Dua Aur Sunnah Tareeqa | Complete Islamic Guide

Qurbani Ki Dua Aur Sunnah Tareeqa According to Quran and Sunnah
Qurbani is not merely the slaughter of an animal. It is an act of worship connected to Tawheed, sincerity, sacrifice, and obedience to Allah. The Sunnah method of Qurbani includes specific etiquettes, authentic duas, mercy towards the animal, and strict adherence to the guidance of Rasulullah ﷺ.
Every year many Muslims perform Qurbani without learning its proper Islamic method. Some neglect the Sunnah duas, others mistreat the animal, while many are unaware of the conditions of valid slaughter. Allah says:
لَن يَنَالَ اللَّهَ لُحُومُهَا وَلَا دِمَاؤُهَا وَلَـٰكِن يَنَالُهُ التَّقْوَىٰ مِنكُمْ
“Neither their meat nor their blood reaches Allah, but what reaches Him is your Taqwa.”
Surah Al-Hajj 22:37
The believer therefore strives to perform Qurbani exactly as taught by Rasulullah ﷺ. Authentic knowledge protects worship from innovation, negligence, and error.

Meaning of Qurbani
Qurbani, also called Udhiyah, refers to sacrificing a permissible animal during the days of Eid al-Adha seeking closeness to Allah. The word itself comes from “Qurb” meaning nearness.
The sacrifice commemorates the obedience of Prophet Ibrahim عليه السلام when he was prepared to sacrifice his beloved son for the sake of Allah.
“Indeed, this was the clear trial.”
Surah As-Saffat 37:106
Virtue of Qurbani
Rasulullah ﷺ said:
“The son of Adam does no action on the Day of Nahr more beloved to Allah than shedding blood.”
Sunan Tirmidhi 1493, Hasan
Ibn Al-Qayyim رحمه الله mentioned that sacrifice combines wealth, sincerity, remembrance of Allah, and revival of the Sunnah of Ibrahim عليه السلام.
A surprising historical fact is that during the golden age of Islamic civilization, scholars wrote entire chapters detailing mercy in animal slaughter centuries before modern animal welfare laws existed.
Dua Before Qurbani
The Sunnah is to recite:
إِنِّي وَجَّهْتُ وَجْهِيَ لِلَّذِي فَطَرَ السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضَ حَنِيفًا وَمَا أَنَا مِنَ الْمُشْرِكِينَ إِنَّ صَلَاتِي وَنُسُكِي وَمَحْيَايَ وَمَمَاتِي لِلَّهِ رَبِّ الْعَالَمِينَ لَا شَرِيكَ لَهُ
Translation: “Indeed, I have turned my face toward the One who created the heavens and the earth, inclining toward truth, and I am not among the polytheists. Indeed my prayer, sacrifice, living and dying are for Allah, Lord of the worlds. He has no partner.”
Then say:
بِسْمِ اللهِ، اللهُ أَكْبَرُ
“In the name of Allah, Allah is the Greatest.”
Without mentioning Allah’s name intentionally, the slaughter becomes invalid according to the stronger scholarly opinion.
Sunnah Method of Slaughter
- The animal should face the Qiblah.
- The knife must be extremely sharp.
- The animal must not see the sharpening process.
- The slaughter should be quick and merciful.
- The throat passages and major veins should be cut properly.
- The spinal cord should not be severed immediately.
- No torture or unnecessary suffering is allowed.
Rasulullah ﷺ said:
“Allah has prescribed excellence in everything. So when you slaughter, slaughter well. Let one of you sharpen his blade and comfort his animal.”
Sahih Muslim 1955
Mercy Towards the Animal
Islam forbids cruelty even during slaughter. The Salaf strongly condemned abuse of animals.
- Do not slaughter one animal in front of another.
- Do not drag or beat the animal.
- Do not begin skinning before death.
- Do not use a blunt knife.
- Provide water and avoid frightening the animal.
“Whoever shows mercy, Allah shows mercy to him.”
Sahih Bukhari
Common Mistakes During Qurbani
- Playing music and making the sacrifice a festival of entertainment.
- Not reciting Bismillah.
- Showing off the sacrifice on social media.
- Using weak or unhealthy animals.
- Delaying Qurbani beyond the prescribed days.
- Treating the act as culture rather than worship.
“Actions are judged by intentions.”
Sahih Bukhari 1
Lessons From Ibrahim عليه السلام
Qurbani teaches:
- Complete obedience to Allah.
- Sacrifice of worldly attachment.
- Sincerity over ritualism.
- Submission even when emotionally difficult.
- Tawheed and rejection of shirk.
“True sacrifice is not blood alone. It is sacrificing the ego for the obedience of Allah.”
Many Muslims spend heavily on Eid clothing and celebrations but neglect understanding the worship itself. The believer revives Sunnah before culture.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is saying Bismillah compulsory?
Yes. Intentionally leaving it invalidates the slaughter according to the stronger opinion based on Quran 6:121.
Can Qurbani be done online?
Yes, appointing someone as an agent is permissible provided the sacrifice is performed correctly according to the Sunnah.
Can one animal be shared?
A camel or cow may be shared by seven people. A sheep or goat is for one person and his household.
Conclusion
Qurbani is among the greatest symbols of Islam. It combines Tawheed, remembrance, sacrifice, mercy, and obedience. Muslims should revive the Sunnah method with authentic knowledge and sincerity.
The real question is not whether the animal was sacrificed. The real question is whether the heart submitted to Allah as Ibrahim عليه السلام submitted.
