Hair and Nails Ruling Before Qurbani Explained

The Ruling on Cutting Hair and Nails Before Qurbani in Dhul Hijjah
Whoever intends to offer Qurbani should avoid cutting hair and nails after the beginning of Dhul Hijjah until the sacrifice is completed. This ruling is established in Sahih Muslim from the authentic statement of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. It is a Sunnah connected to devotion, submission, and honoring the sacred days of Dhul Hijjah.
Every year, as the blessed days of Dhul Hijjah arrive, many Muslims become confused about the ruling regarding hair and nails before Qurbani. Some neglect it completely. Others treat it as cultural practice without understanding its evidence. In an age where Islamic rulings are often reduced to social media forwards without authentic learning, returning to the Qur’an and Sunnah upon the understanding of the Salaf becomes essential.
The first ten days of Dhul Hijjah are among the greatest days in Islam. Allah ﷻ swore by them in the Qur’an:
وَالْفَجْرِ وَلَيَالٍ عَشْرٍ
“By the dawn, and by the ten nights.”
(Surah Al-Fajr 89:1-2)
Ibn Abbas رضي الله عنهما explained that these ten nights refer to the first ten days of Dhul Hijjah. These are days of worship, sacrifice, dhikr, fasting, and repentance.

The Authentic Hadith
Umm Salamah رضي الله عنها narrated that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“When the ten days begin and one of you intends to offer a sacrifice, let him not remove anything from his hair or nails until he has offered the sacrifice.”
Sahih Muslim
This hadith is explicit and authentic. Major scholars such as Imam Ahmad, Ibn Baz, Al-Albani, and Ibn Uthaymeen رحمه الله considered refraining from cutting hair and nails to be obligatory for the one intending Qurbani.
Imam Nawawi رحمه الله mentioned that the prohibition begins after the sighting of the moon of Dhul Hijjah or completion of thirty days of Dhul Qa’dah.

What Exactly Is Prohibited?
The person intending Qurbani should avoid:
- Cutting hair
- Trimming nails
- Removing body hair intentionally
- Taking anything from the skin according to some scholars
This ruling applies only to the individual paying for or intending the sacrifice. It does not automatically apply to the entire household.
If someone cuts hair or nails forgetfully, out of ignorance, or accidentally, there is no sin upon them. However, deliberate violation requires repentance to Allah.
“A believer does not follow Islam based on convenience. He follows revelation even in matters people consider small.”
Wisdom Behind The Ruling
The scholars mentioned several wisdoms behind this Sunnah:
- It resembles some rites of the pilgrims performing Hajj.
- It develops submission and obedience to Allah.
- It increases spiritual connection with the sacrifice.
- It revives consciousness of sacred days.
Shaykh Ibn Uthaymeen رحمه الله explained that preserving the hair and nails symbolizes complete dedication to Allah while awaiting the sacrifice.
One of the remarkable realities of Islam is that even seemingly small Sunnahs shape the heart. The Salaf understood that sincerity is proven through obedience in both major and minor matters.
Surprisingly, historians mention that the Ummah preserved precise sacrificial rulings for over 1400 years with chains of narration stronger than many modern historical records.
Scholarly Opinions
The scholars differed regarding whether the prohibition is obligatory or strongly recommended.
- Hanbali scholars: Considered it prohibited.
- Some Shafi’i and Maliki scholars: Considered it disliked but not sinful.
- Contemporary scholars like Ibn Baz and Al-Albani: Favored prohibition based on the apparent wording of the hadith.
The stronger view, Allahu A‘lam, is that one should avoid cutting hair and nails once Dhul Hijjah begins if intending Qurbani.
Understanding these rulings requires proper study. This is why structured learning upon authentic methodology is essential. IQS offers courses in Aqeedah, Fiqh, Hadith, Arabic, and Qur’an studies grounded upon Qur’an and Sunnah.

Common Mistakes
- Thinking the ruling applies to everyone in the household.
- Believing Qurbani becomes invalid if hair is cut.
- Ignoring the Sunnah entirely.
- Mocking or belittling the ruling.
- Spreading unauthentic messages without evidence.
Many people become careful about worldly contracts and legal documents yet become careless regarding the commands of Allah and His Messenger ﷺ.
“The true believer hears and obeys, even when the wisdom is not fully visible.”
Connection With Ibrahim عليه السلام
Qurbani is not merely slaughtering an animal. It is reviving the legacy of Prophet Ibrahim عليه السلام.
Allah ﷻ said:
فَلَمَّا أَسْلَمَا وَتَلَّهُ لِلْجَبِينِ
“Then when they had both submitted and he put him down upon his forehead…”
(Surah As-Saffat 37:103)
The essence of Dhul Hijjah is submission. Ibrahim عليه السلام submitted. Ismail عليه السلام submitted. The believer submits.
Every Sunnah revived during these days strengthens the connection between the believer and the legacy of Tawheed.
