Why Fathers Should Propose Marriage for Their Daughters: An Islamic Perspective

In today’s society, many righteous men hesitate to propose marriages for their daughters, waiting instead for suitors to come forward. This hesitation often leaves countless girls without suitable matches. There is, however, a strong precedent in Islamic history that supports fathers taking the initiative in proposing marriages for their daughters.

In the Islamic tradition, proposing marriage is not confined to men alone. Women, too, can take the initiative in seeking righteous partners, following the examples set by revered figures in Islamic history. This practice is not only permissible but also exemplified by the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and his Companions.

Among the Companions of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), the actions of Umar ibn al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) offer a profound example. After his daughter Hafsa (may Allah be pleased with her) became a widow, Umar personally approached potential suitors for her. He first went to Uthman ibn Affan (may Allah be pleased with him), but Uthman was not ready for marriage. He then approached Abu Bakr Siddique (may Allah be pleased with him), who also did not respond immediately. Finally, the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) proposed for Hafsa, and she became one of the Mothers of the Believers.

This historical account highlights the importance and legitimacy of fathers taking proactive steps in seeking righteous spouses for their daughters. Umar’s actions demonstrate that there is no shame in a father proposing marriage for his daughter; rather, it is an honorable and praiseworthy act.

Historical Precedents

Khadija’s Proposal: The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) married his first wife, Khadija (may Allah be pleased with her), through a proposal initiated by her. This event signifies the acceptance and respect for women taking the first step in marriage proposals within the Islamic framework.

Offering Marriage to the Prophet: Another example is when a woman offered herself to the Prophet for marriage. Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that a woman came to the Prophet and offered herself to him. Although some might view this as immodest, Anas defended her action, emphasizing her genuine desire to marry the Prophet (Narrated by al-Bukhari 4828).

Halal Ways to Propose

For sisters who have observed a man’s commitment to religion and character, and are satisfied with his suitability, here are some halal ways to propose:

  1. Istikhara Prayer: Seek guidance and help from Allah through istikhara prayers to make an informed decision.
  2. Through a Trusted Person: If direct approach feels uncomfortable, seek help from an imam, a trusted family member, or a close friend to convey your proposal.

Institute of Quran and Sunnah (IQS) offers courses and counseling services to help individuals navigate these sensitive matters according to Islamic teachings.

Haram Ways to Approach

Islam discourages certain behaviors aimed at attracting men, which can lead to negative outcomes:

  1. Inappropriate Dressing: Wearing tight or revealing clothes to attract attention.
  2. Seductive Behavior: Using specific walking styles or voices to seduce men.
  3. Flirtatious Actions: Engaging in behaviors that are meant to arouse lustful thoughts.

Such actions not only go against Islamic principles but also attract men who are more interested in superficial aspects rather than genuine commitment.

Conduct for Men and Women

Men’s Responsibility: If a woman proposes, men must treat the proposal with respect and confidentiality. Making fun of such proposals or gossiping about them is un-Islamic and disrespectful.

Women’s Responsibility: Women should also maintain discretion and avoid publicizing proposals. Evaluating a potential partner’s character and Islamic commitment should be done thoughtfully and privately.
